Abraham Askayou, son of Menachem and Sarah Askayou, was born in 1898 in Palestine. He was married to Sophie and lived next door to his parents who had immigrated from Bulgaria. They lived in a neighborhood called Shevet Tzedek (The Tin Neighborhood) on Shevet Tzedek Street, off Agripas Street in Jerusalem. After his father died, his mother moved in with Abraham and his wife Sophie. In 1927, his oldest daughter, Zehava was born and five years later his youngest daughter Shulamit followed.
A number of years after Shulamit’s birth, Sophie passed away and Abraham remarried. His second wife’s name was Simcha.
Abraham worked in a mosaics factory. Later on he served as a Notair (a Jewish guard in the British police force during the British Mandate period between1917 and 1948). On February 8, 1943 (3Adar Aleph, 5703) Abraham died of a stroke. He was brought to eternal rest at the cemetery on the Mt. of Olives in Jerusalem. He was survived by his second wife and two daughters.
The partial details of Abraham (Avraham) Askayou’s life appear on the Yizkor site of the Ministry of Defense.
His story was researched and completed, and his photograph was added by volunteers for “Giving a Face to the Fallen”.
